A-League: Jake Brimmer sidelined with torn meniscus

Melbourne Victory’s hopes of lifting themselves into the A-League’s top six have suffered a major blow, with star midfielder Jake Brimmer facing an extended period on the sidelines with a serious knee injury.

The Victory confirmed on Tuesday that Brimmer had suffered a torn meniscus in his left knee.

The injury forced the A-League’s reigning Johnny Warren medallist off the field in the first half of his side’s 1-1 draw with Adelaide United at AAMI Park on Sunday.

“Brimmer will undergo a surgical consult in the coming days and the club will work hard with Jake with a view to having him back before the end of the season,” the Victory said in a statement on Tuesday.

The Victory are bottom of the A-League ladder, six points adrift sixth-placed Sydney FC.

However, the Tony Popovic-coached side – who meet the Sydneysiders at Allianz Stadium on Saturday night – have a game in hand on almost every other team in the competition, and could yet force their way up the ladder if they can string a few wins together.
