Jhye Richardson Facts
In December 2015, Jhye had been named in Australia’s squad for the 2016 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup. His participation in the tournament remained a dream though as Cricket Australia, the sport’s governing body in the country had decided about 3 weeks before the tournament not to tour Bangladesh, the tournament host, due to security concerns.
He had first come into the spotlight in the 2016-17 BBL season where he had claimed 11 wickets for the Perth Scorchers. He was named the ‘Player of the Final’ in that tournament after producing a match-winning spell of 3/30 in his quota of 4 overs which had restricted the Sydney Sixers to an under-par score of 141/9. The value of his contribution became even more significant in the 2nd innings as the Scorchers raced to the total in 15.5 overs at the loss of just 1 wicket, lifting the BBL title for the 3rd time.
In November 2018, in a Sheffield Shield match at the Optus Stadium, he had recorded astonishing figures of 8/47 in the first innings of Western Australia‘s fixture against New South Wales, highlighting the fact that he was a serious prospect even in the longer version of cricket.
He was honored with the ‘Bradman Young Cricketer of the Year’ award at the ‘Allan Border Medal ceremony’ in 2018, an awards event organized annually by Cricket Australia.
In June 2018, he was part of the Australian bowling attack that was hammered for an ODI world record score of 481/6 by England. Such was the flogging that Australia had to use 8 bowlers in that match and Jhye was one of just 2 Australian bowlers to have completed his quota of 10 overs. His figures read 3/92.
Although most cricketers are known to indulge in some ritual or superstition before the start of a match, Jhye takes it to another level as he is often seen re-tying his shoelaces several times, pre-match, until they achieve the desired tightness.
