The 92-year-old whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg, who revealed the scope of US involvement in the Vietnam War, has passed away.
His family reported that he passed away from pancreatic cancer at his Kensington, California, home.
The 1971 Pentagon Papers leak by the former US military analyst earned him the moniker “the most dangerous man in America”.
The Nixon administration attempted to prevent publication in the New York Times, which resulted in a Supreme Court battle.
However, Ellsberg’s espionage accusations were finally dropped. “Daniel was an activist against war, a devoted husband, father, grandparent, and great-grandfather, a good friend to many, and an inspiration to many more. He was also a truth-seeker and a patriot who spoke the truth. We will all miss him terribly,” Ellsberg’s family stated in a statement.
What Ellsberg discovered throughout that time period caused him great guilt. He reasoned that political pressure to terminate the conflict might become overwhelming if the general public knew.
That reasoning led to the disclosure of the Pentagon Papers, 7,000 official pages that revealed deceptions by several US administrations.
The documents went against the government’s official line on the war, and the damaging information they revealed helped put an end to the fighting and, in the end, laid the groundwork for President Richard M. Nixon’s demise.
Alan Rusbridger, a former chief editor of The Guardian, told the BBC that Ellsberg was “the grandfather of whistleblowers.”
In a statement made on Radio 4’s World Tonight, Rusbridger said that his participation “radically changed the public opinion in the Vietnam War.”
